Our After-School Program
Our Frida Kahlo After-School Care Center is a lively, cheerful place where children can laugh, learn, make friends, and feel safe. We view the afternoon as a valuable space for living and growing. Every child is warmly welcome here—just as they are.
Our educational approach is characterized by appreciation, a focus on resources, and individualized support for each child to help them discover their talents and strengthen their social skills. We meet each child where they are in their own world, focus on their personal strengths and needs, and work together to create an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated as an asset. Building self-esteem is at the heart of everything we do each day.
Framework Conditions & Organizational Structure
The OGS works closely with the morning program at the Frida Kahlo School to ensure a holistic education and care.
- Group Structure: Care is provided in six fixed groups. This offers the children consistent caregivers and a reliable framework for orientation. At the same time, we follow a partially open concept: The children have the opportunity to move about freely, visit other groups, use play areas flexibly, and make friends on their own.
- Care Models & Hours: To accommodate the diverse lifestyles of families, the Düsseldorf care model at our facility offers three time options after school:
- Model 1: Until 2:15 p.m. (available with or without a meal)
- Model 2: Until 3:15 p.m. (with lunch and after-school clubs)
Model 3: Until 4:15 p.m. (with lunch and extracurricular activities)
Comprehensive Vacation Care & Closed Days
Reliable care during school breaks is an integral part of our program. To provide families with maximum planning certainty, the following schedule applies:
- Easter, summer, and fall breaks: The OGS is open during the first half of the break. During the second half of the break, the facility remains closed.
- Winter break: The OGS remains closed during the first half of winter break and reopens during the second half.
- New starting next school year (2027/2028): In accordance with current legal requirements regarding the reliability of full-day care, the number of closure days throughout the entire school year is strictly limited. Starting next school year, our facility will have a maximum of 20 closure days.
During the periods when the center is open, we organize a varied, interest-based vacation program featuring field trips and projects.
Lunch Together
Lunch is more than just a meal—it’s a shared, refreshing break and an important social ritual. Sharing meals together not only promotes healthy eating habits but also provides an opportunity for meaningful conversations and the development of social skills.
- Quality: The food is freshly prepared and delivered daily by our partner, Lunchbox Hilden.
Inclusion & Culture: The meals are entirely halal, so that all children can participate in meals together without restrictions.
Clubs & Recreation
We offer a diverse range of after-school clubs and partnerships in the areas of sports, creativity, music, and media. The goal is to provide children with opportunities to explore their own strengths and discover new hobbies. Our programs are process-oriented rather than results-oriented—the joy of trying new things and making discoveries takes precedence over the perfect end product.
Multidisciplinary Team
The quality of our educational programs in the afternoon and a trusting partnership with parents are of central importance to us.
This is supported by our multiprofessional team. The diverse professional backgrounds of our staff enable a holistic view of each child:
- Mix of Professionals: Our team consists of trained educators, childcare workers, support staff, as well as internal and external partners.
- Coordination with the School: Through close communication with teachers, special education teachers, and school social workers, we build a bridge between the morning and afternoon programs.
- Quality assurance: Regular team meetings, case consultations, and professional development sessions organized by our sponsoring organization (Diakonie Düsseldorf) ensure the continuous improvement of our educational work.
